Skitour Pazieltal Valley November 18th

back to magazine overview

Heavy snowfalls turned the Arlberg mountains early on into wintery white. Already at the beginning of November the first turns on the Schlegelkopf and Trittkopf could be done in the snow. After another snow storm, bright sunshine was predicted for Saturday 18 November. Reason enough to explore the Pazieltal valley below the Valluga and the Northern Trittkopf.

Departure in the morning

Thick clouds envelop the mountains around Lech Zürs in an opaque veil.

"Is the weather forecast completely wrong?"

Nevertheless, we start with top motivation. After all, for Anna Reschreiter from the Hotel Gradenburg and for me it is the first meters of the season with touring skis. Every year we are looking forward to the first ski tour like a child and hopefully the first downhill run in powder snow.

Ascent to the Pazieltal valley

The first few meters run uphill along the ski slope. The snow cannons are already running at full speed, so that the winter sports enthusiasts can find perfectly groomed pistes at the beginning of December and enjoy skiing in Zürs to the full.

That's how we stomp up to the Trittalpe and head for the Hexenboden Lift. The sky is slowly becoming clearer, which gives us hope that the sky is cloudless at the summit.

Looking in the direction of Valluga we leave the Pazielhütte on the left and start ascending in sharp bends in the direction of the Northern Trittkopf. At the latest here it becomes clear to both of us that there is still no other trace to be seen and that we are the first to undertake the ascent. Every minute the sky becomes clearer and the sun displaces even the last shreds of clouds in a very short time.

Summit

The gaze wanders around again and again and we look over to the Eisenscharte, where the first tourers descend into the Pazieltal.
After about 800 m of altitude difference we decide to take off our skins and prepare for the descent. Before we enjoy the view over to Valluga and the striking Roggspitze, in which direction we start our descent.

After just a few turns, we are sure that the ascent was worth it.

Untraced powder snow and bright blue skies... skiers' heart, what more do you want!!

Finally, we change sides of the slope and glide down over wide slopes down to the Pazielhütte, where we have a good rest and review the first ski tour of the season.

Descent to Zürs

Finally, we stay at the hut for almost an hour and watch the next hikers who follow our tracks up towards Trittkopf. Surely they have just as wonderful conditions as we do and can enjoy every turn.

We finish our snack and ski along the ascent track out of the Pazielal. Arriving at the Trittalpe we realize that the snow groomers were already in use and the way down to Zürs is already prepared. With such marvellous conditions, nothing stands in the way of a successful start to the season.
